[EXT. NIGHTTIME - ODESSA, TEXAS]
(CLAIRE and BRODY are sitting on a set of bleachers, apart from the rest of the kids, making out. BRODY'S hand begins to go up CLAIRE'S skirt, but she pushes it away.)
CLAIRE: (pulling away) Wait. Let's take a little break.
BRODY: (frustrated) Want to go back to the party?
CLAIRE: No, I just--I'm going through something and I don't know if now's the right time.
BRODY: You know what? You just need to relax. (He pulls CLAIRE in for another kiss.)
CLAIRE: What's gotten into you?
BRODY: I just really like you, Claire. Don't you like me? (He pushes CLAIRE down onto a bleacher.)
CLAIRE: No, Brody! Stop!
(CLAIRE rolls off the bleacher in an attempt to get away, but BRODY follows.)
BRODY: (getting on top of CLAIRE) You’re going to hurt yourself.
CLAIRE: (crying) No! No! Stop it! What are you doing? No!
BRODY: This is going to happen, Claire. (putting an arm over her throat to stop her screaming)
CLAIRE: Get off of me!
BRODY: Don't be a bitch! Let it happen!
(CLAIRE manages to break free, but BRODY grabs her ankle and CLAIRE falls. Her necks lands on a several branches and she stops moving.)
BRODY: (panicking) Claire. Claire! (He rolls her over and sees a piece of wood protruding from her neck.)

Note: Often victims are made to dismiss the event and deny that it happened to the people who love them. Victims play their part in the perpetrator having control over them and the situation. By not telling they are in part accepting their role as victims and lack of control. They deny the event and even excuse the perpetrator’s actions and take the blame upon themselves.
CLAIRE: Look, You can’t say anything. I’m fine. He was drunk, it was an accident.
ZACH: What, part was an accident? The rape or the murder?
CLAIRE: It didn’t happen.
ZACH: Because he killed you before he had the chance.
CLAIRE: I’m alive!
ZACH: Yeah, now, but you weren’t on the autopsy table.
CLAIRE: Shh!
ZACH: You said you had a hole in your head. Maybe, whenever they pulled out whatever it was they rebooted or whatever.
CLAIRE: I’m not a hard drive!
ZACH: No, your Little Miss Miracle-Grow.
CLAIRE: Don’t ever call me that again.
ZACH: You’ve got to tell somebody about Brody.
CLAIRE: No, I don’t! And even if I wanted to, which I don’t; I don’t have a mark on me. But you know what happened and he knows what happened. All he knows is that he was drunk and I’m not dead.
JACKIE: What happened to you last night?
CLAIRE: I was hoping you’d tell me, I had way too much to drink.
BRODY: I, I got to go to the bathroom.
Brody runs off and looks worried while one of his other victims looks at Claire. She looks worried because she knows what has transpired between the two.

CLAIRE: Oh, Lori.
LORI: Hey, I saw you go off with Brody Mitchum last night at the bonfire.
CLAIRE: So?
LORI: So, What happened?
CLAIRE: Nothing, nothing happened.
LORI: I went off with Brody Meacham once. Nothing happened to me to.
Note: think it is this encounter that makes Claire seek justice not just for herself but for the other victims.

You get drunk, you come on to me and it’s my fault?
CLAIRE: You’re a liar!

CLAIRE: Hi.
NOAH: Your mother told me lost control of the car.
CLAIRE: That’s what I told her happened.
NOAH: Is there something you want to tell me?
CLAIRE: I ran the car into the wall on purpose.
NOAH: You could’ve killed yourself.
CLAIRE: I wasn’t thinking about me.
NOAH: Well, what were you thinking about? You’ve got to start trusting me.
CLAIRE: I lied to you.
NOAH: About what?
CLAIRE: I lied to you when I said…
I lied to you when I said nothing happened at the bonfire.
NOAH: What happened to you?
CLAIRE: He tried to… He tried to force me.
NOAH: The quarterback?
CLAIRE: He threw me down, and I hit my head, and I woke up somewhere else.
I think Noah should be consoling her instead of the other way around. Why does Claire feel compelled to apologize to her father besides lying to him?
CLAIRE: I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I lied to you. I didn’t know what else to do. I’m can’t prove anything.(hence not legally a crime if no evidence) He was going to get away with it again. I’m not the only one.
Please, you can’t say anything.
I can’t believe that he leaves it at that instead of suggesting retribution for the crime. It is one of the many reasons I think he gains power over Claire. He has now become her confident the protector of her secret and thus has power over her. By keeping quite he is also giving Brody power a code among criminals. One can also conclude he is keeping the secret to protect his own reputation or out of guilt thus a coconspirator.
NOAH: No one is going to know. No one’s to know anything.

NOAH: Hello, Brody. I’m Claire’s father.
BRODY: I know who you are.
You’re the guy I’m going to sue.
The rapist still has rights and thus power even though he is in the wrong. He can say she is lying and defaming his character and thus looks like a liar or slut either ways she loses.
NOAH: I’m very sorry about the accident.
BRODY: It wasn’t an accident.
NOAH: What makes you say that?
BRODY: Because she crashed my car on purpose. She’s a freak! She’s not human!
Name calling is another way the perpetrator takes more control by reducing his prey/victim to the standing of an animal or non-human.
NOAH: I put more stock in her humanity than I would in yours.
You tried to rape my daughter.
BRODY: I didn’t touch her.
NOAH: Well, it’s her word against yours and from my perspective she’s the more reliable witness.
BRODY: You don’t know your daughter.
NOAH: I know her better than even she does.
This statement is clearly a statement that he has some kind of unknown power over her that she herself is unaware of. Mainly of her origins and the source of her “powers” he was hired and told to pretend to be her dad until the time was right.
BRODY: I don’t have to listen to this.
NOAH: Shh! Claire is a very special girl.
(This statement shows that he sees himself as protector of her like she is a little girl that is weak and innocent but this isn’t true. Claire is very mature and is fully capable of taking care of herself, however, men clearly have power over her in various aspects.)
It is confusing to her and she doesn’t need some punk making her life any more difficult.
(Noah doesn’t realize it but by his very actions he is making the situation worse. By denying what has happened and erasing Brody’s memory. He is robbing Brody of redemption and raping Claire again by first hiding the truth and secondly by not erasing her memory of the rape.)
